Rockin' the Block - a Hixson Ave Update

Construction is underway at Hixson Ave, and we simply wouldn't be where we are without the support of our local community. From Subcontractors, Subconsultants, Vendors, and Corporate Sponsors to Volunteers and Habitat Supporters, we absolutely couldn’t do it with any of you!

Since our Ground Breaking Ceremony in March, the Hixson construction site has seen a lot of skilled tradespeople, apprentices, volunteers, and RAIN! Despite the weather, we have had an enormous outpouring of support from our local community for these two houses. A few highlights of the project so far include:

  • Placing of the foundation walls for both houses in ONE day with the help of 27 masons

  • Nearly 90 1st-3rd year electrical apprentices from CNY JATC over THREE days, along with 3 full-time instructors, to lay the underslab electrical conduit

  • A great group of volunteers who laid the radiant floor heat piping for both houses in a single day

  • Concrete slabs poured in a single day

  • Masonry walls erected by various masons through the MCAA Upstate New York Chapter – they are most definitely “Rockin’ the Block!”

Speaking of masonry walls, we are proud to announce that the masonry walls are COMPLETE! The masons from MCAA worked tirelessly through the rainy season to complete the masonry walls of both houses, working alongside the electricians each step of the way. We absolutely couldn't do this without you! Due to their hard work, this project was featured in the National Concrete Masonry Association's newsletter, which is distributed throughout the US and Canada. You can check it out here.

This project has also been featured in a video by Syracuse University News! Watch the video here.

Now that the masonry work is complete, we are moving on to framing and other activities. We've already had several groups out to volunteer, and I know many more of you are scheduled for the months to come. We can't wait to get you out to the site to see our progress and help us make more! If you are interested in volunteering, please check VolunteerUp for available shifts.

Again, we can't thank all of you enough for your support. Head on over to our Build Page & Facebook to stay up-to-date on these exciting houses! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call us at the office 315-422-2230.
