Why a women only build?

Women Build is not intended to be exclusive. It is simply a way of providing women with an opportunity to learn construction skills in a non-threatening environment.
Construction is a male-dominated field. Even on the more "forgiving" Habitat sites, men still take the lead in construction, and women are relegated - sometimes due to their own lack of confidence - to tasks such as painting, landscaping and cleaning up the site. But on a Women Build site, women feel more comfortable, are willing to tackle all aspects of construction, and, given the right training, quickly become skilled.

What about insurance on a construction site?

Habitat for Humanity has a blanket insurance policy for all volunteers who have filled out and signed the Release & Waiver of Liability form attached to the application. This holds not only for the construction site but for the training sessions and pre-builds as well.

How can men contribute to the Women Build?

There is room on the Women Build for men. During the week-long build, men can be a part of food services and serve food and drink. They can also be involved in such important aspects as fundraising. In the past, a group of men held a bake sale and raised $7500 for a Women Build.

Is there a place on the build for children?

Children under the age of 16 will not be allowed on the construction site. However, we can arrange for children to come to the site late and help clean up or they may assist with such projects as landscaping once the house is built.

Why is Habitat for Humanity promoting feminist issues?

Our only agenda is working toward the elimination of poverty housing - one home, one family at a time. The focus of Women Build is on empowering women to take action to move children out of poverty. Women Build brings together women from all walks of life to address in a concrete way the children’s housing crisis that is facing more than 12 million children. Women Build subscribes totally to our stated mission: To work through affiliates to nurture, recruit and train women to build simple, decent, healthy and affordable houses.

How do homeowners feel about their homes being built by women?

Most homeowners are excited by the idea. Sometimes male homeowners are a bit apprehensive at first, but after construction gets under way, we find they have every confidence in the quality of their home’s construction and have great respect and gratitude for the women volunteers.

What do you do if there is a male homeowner?

Male homeowners build right alongside the women volunteers.
