In the Media...
The Women Build project hosted a press conference on December 8, 2004, to officially announce the project to the community. We would like to thank all of our volunteers who braved the cold winds to show their support at the press conference, as well as Assemblywoman Joan Christensen, Clear Channel’s Kathy Denman, volunteer photographer Denise Doser, and City of Syracuse Parks and Recreation Department. The press conference was a great success! We received several articles in the Post Standard as well as coverage on News 10 Now and WSYR Radio, and we are continually contacted by many different media sources interested in our project and progress.

Family Update
Sonya Little and her daughters, Brandi
Abrams, 15, and Shianne Abrams, 13, will be the homeowners for the Women
Build house. The family currently rents a home from a family friend.
The bedrooms are very small and the girls are growing out of their
rooms. Sonya Little is a very hard-working individual. She was
initially denied when she handed in an application for a Habitat house.
Instead of being defeated, Sonya worked to improve her credit.
Sonya's attitude in life is that nothing can stop her from
accomplishing her goals and she will work hard to achieve them. Sonya
is a single mother who is raising two teenage daughters. She was raised
by a single mom as well. Women have played a major influence in her
life, which is why she is excited to be a part of the Women Build
project. She feels very comfortable having women build her home and
knows that not only will it be well built, but built with the detail and
dedication that only women can provide. In Sonya's words, "The idea of
becoming a homeowner makes me feel very emotional, I don't know if I
can speak about it. I have wanted a home of my own for so long, it will
really be an accomplishment." |

Post-blitz
Our blitz week ends May 7th, 2005. However, construction on the
inside of the home will go on throughout the summer. If you are
interested in finishing work, such as drywall, cabinetry, flooring,
painting, landscaping, etc., be sure to stay tuned for more information
on our post-blitz schedule. This is the stage of the build where kids
can be involved. |

In the Spotlight...
In the midst of press-conference planning, training session scheduling, financial concerns, meetings with architects, and volunteer database maintenance, I find it necessary to take a moment to reflect on the importance and the true meaning of this project and how my involvement makes a difference. We are all taking time out of our already busy lives to make the lives of our neighbors better. Many of you have shared your stories and inspiration with me already, and I would like to use this space as a place to share them with the whole Women Build team.
Please send me your stories, your tales of inspiration, motivation and triumph. We will share our stories to bring our energy together and make this project as meaningful and special to each of us as we can.
