Builds

WHAT
Builds run Wednesday through Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Volunteers usually come for the entire day.
The builds that are currently running are:

323 Marcellus St.- This is the Women’s Build.

503 Grand Ave.- This build is open to anyone.

215 Grace St.- This is the Interfaith build.  Labor and building costs are mostly sponsored by churches and other religious organizations.

WHO
Our houses are built almost completely by volunteers.  We have volunteers of all ages and all walks of life.  No experience is necessary.  Some volunteers come only for one day, others have been with us for years and come several times a week.  Some come alone, some come in groups.  At the moment we can only accommodate 5 or 6 volunteers at a build at a time so we are not always able to accommodate large groups.

HOW
How volunteering for a build works.
1.  You contact Tim Scott, our Volunteer Coordinator with the dates you would like to work.
2.  Tim gets back to you, letting you know if we need volunteers for those dates.
3.  On the day you are scheduled you show up at the build for which you are scheduled and look for Paul, our construction manager.  If you get lost or have trouble connecting with the crew you call Paul on his cell phone at 952-9599.
4.  If you found the experience rewarding contact the Volunteer Coordinator and have yourself scheduled again.

The ReStore

The ReStore is a warehouse of donated new and used building materials open to the public.  Sales go towards Habitat projects.
Hours are:
Monday-Thursday & Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Friday 12 p.m. – 8 p.m.
But volunteers often work outside of these hours as well.  Volunteers at the ReStore work the cash register, assist customers, stock the shelves, pick up donations and help with deconstructs.  A deconstruct is the removal of re-usable material from houses that are about to be torn down.
To volunteer contact Tim who will schedule you.

The Office

The Habitat Office is open from Monday thru Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Volunteers answer the phone, enter data into the computer, do filing, stuff newsletters and perform other administrative tasks.
To volunteer contact Tim who will schedule you.

The Volunteer Spirit

1. Everyone wants Saturdays.  If you want to work on a Saturday you will have lots of competition and it will be hard to schedule you.  If you can take a day off work to help us on a weekday we would be most grateful.
2. Be patient.  We work to please but to keep funds going towards houses we have a very small staff and may take a while to get back to you.  Be persistent, check in regularly but please be kind.  If it's urgent give us a call in addition to emailing.
3. Be flexible.  Construction is unpredictable by nature.  Mostly we don't know exactly what you will be doing until you are doing it.  Materials arriving on time, the weather, the speed of a crew, permits and many other factors affect how a build progresses.
