Information for Groups
What Habitat can do for your Group
We work with businesses, community groups, family groups, religious
groups, student groups, fraternities, athletic teams and just about
every other kind of organization you can imagine. We are a
wonderful place for team building because on our builds a CEO and a
mailroom clerk are on an even playing field working together to achieve
something meaningful. Most groups walk away from us energized and
enthusiastic about each other and the house they have built. By
the end of the day it is always "The house we built!"
What your Group can do for Habitat
Houses cost money. About $65,000
each. That averages to about $1,354 per day of construction.
We receive no government funding so without the money to pay for
the materials we cannot provide housing for low income families or
provide your group an opportunity to volunteer. Please consider
conducting fundraisers in your organization and arriving with a check
the day you are going to build. We would be thrilled to have you
as full partners and participants will be all the more
enthusiastic as they are now "invested" in Habitat.
The Challenges
When applying to us as a group there are a few things to keep in mind.
1. Our houses are small and we have limited supervision. We
usually cannot safely accommodate groups of more than 10. We may
have to split you up in teams or put you on more than one day.
2. Everyone wants Saturdays. If your group wants to work on a
Saturday you will have lots of competition and it will be hard to
schedule you. If you can take a day off work to help us on a weekday we would me most grateful.
3. Be patient. We work to please but to keep funds going
towards houses we have a very small staff and may take a while to get
back to you. Be persistent, check in regularly but please be
kind. If it's urgent give us a call in addition to emailing.
4. Be flexible. Construction is unpredictable by nature.
Mostly we don't know exactly what you will be doing until you are
doing it. Materials arriving on time, the weather, the speed of a
crew, permits and many other factors affect how a build progresses.
We look forward to working with you!
